The Bangur Nagar police have registered a case against four persons, including a woman, for running a fake-job racket wherein 94 persons were allegedly duped to the tune of over Rs 50 lakh on the pretext of providing them highly paid salaried jobs in Canada and South Africa.

According to the Bangur Nagar police, recently, a 26-year old Govandi resident, identified as Attaullah Moinuddin Sheikh, had lodged a complaint with them alleging that one Ashok Kumar Singh, who runs a placement agency in Bangur Nagar area in Malad, had taken Rs 10,000 from him under the guise of providing him a skilled-worker job in Canada.

"However, after receiving paid the money, Singh and his accomplice Amreen switched off their phones. Sheikh then lodged a complaint with the police. Singh had shut down his operations after which 93 more people approached us alleging that they too were duped by Singh in a similar fashion," said an officer from Bangur Nagar police station.

He added that, others too were promised jobs in South Africa and Canada. "The sum total that is believed to have been taken by Singh from all his victims is nearly Rs 53 lakh. The amounts were accepted in cash and cheques. We have registered a case of cheating and common intention against Singh, Amreen and two other accomplices. We are on the lookout for them," explained the officer.

In another incident, the Amboli police have registered a case of cheating against two men — Sanjay Patel and Nimesh Patel — for allegedly duping Ajay Chavan, 31, of Rs 2.51 lakh on the pretext of providing him a job in Singapore. "The accused persons had promised the victim an assistant event manager post to Chavan in Singapore and gave him an employment letter and an e-pass. On reaching Singapore, Chavan was informed by the authorities that his e-pass was bogus and was sent back to Mumbai. Chavan then lodged a complaint against the duo. We are on the lookout for them," said an officer from Amboli police station.
