Government-run Sir JJ Hospital undertook its first cadaver donation on Sunday. 38-year-old Sangeeta Mahajan from Jalgaon had met with a road accident on July 17, Monday, and was admitted to Sir JJ Hospital on Thursday morning.

According to doctors, she was on ventilator since she was admitted but was responding positively to treatment. She was later shifted for higher medical management and was declared brain dead on Saturday evening.

While the liver was sent to Jupiter Hospital and both eyes were donated to a patient in Sir JJ Hospital, her heart could not be donated and her kidneys were declared unfit for donation.

"Doctors at the hospital found Mahajan's brain was dying. One of her eye was donated to 60-year-old male while the other one to a 48-year-old female," Dr TP Lahane, dean of Sir JJ Hospital, said.

According to the medical staff, after Sangeeta's husband, Rajesh Mahajan, gave his consent on Saturday evening, the process of cadaver donation started. Sangeet is the mother of two children.

JJ Hospital receives several cases of brain dead patients but cadaver donation is not possible since relatives of patients do not usually give consent.

Dr TP Lahane said, "There is a long waiting list to receive donated eyes. We have been receiving many brain dead cases at the hospital but it is difficult to convince family members of the patient to donate their organs. We are taking steps to spread awareness and regular counselling will be given to ensure that we get more organ donation."
