His over enthusiasm for giving sound media bytes landed NCP leader Jitendra Awhad in a spot on Thursday. Awhad got a dressing-down from a fuming Ajit Pawar for getting into a verbal spat with BJP legislator Anil Gote in the House and then taking the fight outside the house.

It all began when Awhad provoked Gote with some objectionable remarks. Chaos prevailed in the House as both traded verbal vollies. Presiding Officer Haribhau Bagade controlled the situation by announcing that he would expunge all the remarks from House records.

As if taking his cue from BJP's scam-for-scam strategy in Parliament, Gote told the media outside Vidhan Bhavan that former home minister Chhagan Bhujbal had got a kickback of Rs6 crore for appointing Ranjit Singh Sharma as city's police chief.

Gote alleged that fake stamp paper scam kingpin Abdul Kareem Telgi had given Rs4 crore to ex-commissioner RS Sharma so that he could give the money to Bhujbal to bag the top post. Waving a narco test report of Sharma, he claimed that it was at the behest of Sharad Pawar that Sharma became the Mumbai CP.

Awhad defended the accusations saying Gote had been jailed in the Telgi case and he had lost mental balance. The NCP leader said a trust floated by Telgi had Gote as one of its trustees. "He is inventing something which even the court could not establish." At the same time, Gote said he had been implicated in the case and had come out of it.

By then, according to top NCP leaders, the damage had already been done. They said the names of Bhujbal and Sharad Pawar were dragged into something that was easily avoidable.

So livid was Ajit Pawar that he summoned Awhad to group leader Jayant Patil's chamber and blasted him for unnecessarily raking up the issue. Sources told that an upset Ajit Pawar even used expletives as he took Awhad to task.
