US authorities have told Rabiya Khan they are prepared to help in the probe into the death of her daughter Jiah, and that they have written to the Indian government offering their assistance in the case.
US officials conveyed this to Rabiya when she visited the US Consulate at the Bandra-Kurla Complex on Monday.
“The US officials told us they are ready to help in the case and that they have started the procedure with the Indian government,” said Dinesh Tiwari, Rabiya’s lawyer.
Last week, Rabiya said she would move the Bombay High Court to get the police to investigate the case afresh, after they filed a chargesheet accusing Suraj Pancholi of abetting Jiah’s suicide.
The police said there was no evidence that she was killed, but her mother is not convinced and she insists that the police had not considered material provided by her despite specific instructions by the high court. She has since been demanding a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Rabiya had written to the prime minister, the chief minister and the home minister asking them to intervene in the matter. She had also written to the US ambassador to India Nancy Powell seeking the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the probe as Jiah was an American citizen.
Rabiya said that she had received a reply from the US embassy that it was willing to help in the probe, it could do so only if the Indian agencies sought its assistance.
The legal department at the embassy had written to the CBI and the local crime branch about the case and a response was awaited, Tiwari said.
“We met Rosemary Mcray, chief  of the American Citizens Services Unit, and we were told that the embassy will send reminders to the Indian authorities offering help from the FBI in all respects, especially forensics,” Tiwari said. They also submitted various documents related to the case to Mcray.
Jiah, 25, who made a remarkable film debut in the Ram Gopal Varma production “Nishabd” opposite Amitabh Bachchan, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her Juhu home on June 3 last year. She was said to be in a relationship with Suraj Pancholi, the son of actors Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab.
