The Sion police on Tuesday registered a case of theft based on a complaint filed by an employee of Karnataka-based firm, who claimed that valuables worth Rs 53 lakh had gone missing from his bag while he was travelling on a private luxury bus from Udipi to deliver them to Opera House.

According to the Sion police, Purshottam S Amin, 49, was employed as a salesman with a jewellery firm in Udipi. On Monday night, Amin left in a private luxury bus with a bag containing rings and diamonds to be delivered to a firm in Opera house. "Amin claims that he checked his bag when he got off at Sion and found the valuables missing," said Yeshudas Gorde, senior inspector from Sion police station. "We were told by the complainant that he had kept the bag under his seat and believes that someone from inside the bus could have stolen the jewels," he added.

Amin also informed the police that he had travelled to Mumbai seven times before with ornaments. "It's a private bus and would have stopped at certain places. We will interrogate all the people who were travelling on the bus that time," said Gorde. A case has been registered under section 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code.
