The crime branch on Saturday arrested a jeweller on charges of cheating people of the fishing community in Mahul village, Chembur, to the tune of Rs1.90 crore.

The man, Uttamkumar Malla, alias Rajubhai Sonar, 36, lives in Chembur and is a native of West Bengal's Midnapur district. The police said they are looking out for his wife Dipali, 28.

According to the police, Malla took gold jewellery and cash from people, promising them good returns. He set up his jewellery business in the area in 2008 and gained the trust of the people.

But in August last year, when they found Malla's shop shut for a long period and could not contact him, they realised they had been cheated. A total 87 people are known to have been duped.

"People in need of money would mortgage or even sell their jewellery to him and he offered them a good deal," said an official of the crime branch Chembur unit.

He said that Malla collected about five kg of gold jewellery and Rs25 lakh in cash from the people. They registered a case with the RCF police.

"On specific information, Malla was arrested in West Bengal on Saturday," the official said.
