JEE Advanced results declared, Panchkula boy tops

Out of 1,55,158 candidates, 18,138 qualified the exams; in 2017, 50,000 students had passed the examination

The much awaited results of the Joint entrance exams(JEE) Advance for admissions to IITs and other premiere engineering institutes across the country were announced on Sunday morning.

A total of of 1,55,158 candidates appeared in both papers 1 and 2 in JEE (Advanced) 2018. Of this, 18138 candidates have qualified the exam i.e., they scored above the cut?offs required for qualification. This is more than 1.6 times the number of seats that are being offered. The number of students qualifying the exams has seen a huge dip from 2017 when over 50,000 students had made the cut. The dip is being attributed to the fact that there were no bonus marks awarded to students this year unlike the last few years.

Pranav Goyal from Panchkula topped the exams bagging the first place in the Common Rank List (CRL) while Meenal Parakh from Kota topped from amongst the girls with CRL 6. Rishi Agarwal from Mumbai emerged the Maharashtra topper with CRL 8.

The number of students clearing the exams went down from 50,455 in 2017 to 18,138 this year. IIT Delhi zone recorded the best performance amongst the 7 zones with 5072 students qualifying the exams. IIT Madras ranked second with 3585 students and IIT Bombay stood third with 2936 students making the cut.

This was the first year when the exam was conducted in a completely online mode. 2018. This year (i.e., in 2018), 800 supernumerary seats have been created specifically for female candidates in the IITs in order to improve the gender balance in IITs and as per directives of the MHRD, Government of India.
