A sessions court on Wednesday granted bail to 35-year-old corporate lawyer Janhavi Gadkar, who was arrested in June for allegedly driving drunk, killing two people and injuring four.

The court granted bail to Gadkar on a surety of Rs30,000, directed her to cooperate with the police and visit the police station whenever summoned by the investigating officer. Apart from that, Gadkar was instructed not to tamper with the evidence or leave the country without seeking permission of the court. The court asked her to be present when the trial begins.

Sessions court judge Sanjay Patil, while granting bail, observed that the investigation of the RCF police in the case is over. Patil also observed that Gadkar is a woman and, hence, the case needs to be dealt with differently.

Gadkar's lawyer had applied for bail, saying the investigation in the case is over and there's no need for her to be kept behind bars. He had also argued in court that the investigating agency had already recorded witnesses' statements in front of the magistrate and, hence, there is no scope for Gadkar to tamper with the evidence. Her lawyer added that the police have already collected the medical report and the report of the RTO officer on the vehicle.

The prosecution, while objecting to Gadkar's bail, argued that it will send out a wrong message to the society. The prosecution said that Gadkar was involved in an accident earlier as well and there is a possibility that she might repeat the offence.

Two people — Mohammed Abdul Sayyad (55) and Mohammed Salim Sabuwala (50) — had died that night on June 9, when Gadkar's car rammed into their taxi.

On Wednesday evening, Gadkar was released from the Byculla women's prison after her family members presented the bail paper to the authorities. Dressed in salwaar-kameez, she walked out with her face covered with her dupatta. She was received by her mother and husband Rahul Sarella.

Interestingly, as Gadkar was about to be released, the jail authorities, extending VIP treatment to her, allowed her private vehicle inside the compound of the premises. A senior jail officer informed that no permission for this was given and this matter would be looked into.
