Professor Tushar Desai, chairman of the (ad-hoc) board of studies of BSc (IT) and principal of DG Ruparel College, Matunga, tried to clarify his stand on the varsity virtually repeating another college's question paper, in a telephonic interview with Kanchan Srivastava on Thursday. Today (Friday), a final call on whether there will be a re-exam of the software testing paper will be taken at a board of exam meeting.

You hold an MSc and a PhD in physics. You are also head of the physics department in your college. What are you doing in the board of studies of Information Technology of Mumbai University?
(Angrily) Who told you I am the HOD of physics? I am not. Don't talk to me without any having any information about me.

Your college website says you are heading the department.
Impossible. Which website you are talking about? How can my college website say something wrong? (After checking the website personally) Yes. It's my mistake. It is old information. I am no more the HOD.

Why are you holding a post in university for which you are not qualified?
Who told you I am not qualified? I am the patron of Computer Society of India. I have been in the Maharashtra state board. I am teaching computer science in my college since 1984. I have been the coordinator for IT at the university since 2001. I have both expertise and experience. Moreover, this board is just an ad-hoc, not a full-fledged one.

Does that mean the university doesn't follow basic norms for selection of an ad-hoc board?
I am not saying that. Don't put words in my mouth. Probably there was no qualified person available that time so they selected me.

Do you think it is injustice to thousands of students that unqualified people are deciding their future?
No. I reiterate, I have the domain knowledge and adequate experience to do my job.

Will you take moral responsibility for the question paper scam of BSc (IT) exposed by dna, which happened under your nose, and quit from the post?
First of all it is not a scam or fraud as you have reported. Not 100% questions are same. This is just a mistake of the paper-setter and I am not responsible for it. So why should I quit from the post?

How can copy-pasting 22 of 24 questions from an internal paper of a college in a university exam paper be just a mistake? Besides, BoS suggests the names of paper-setters, so you can't absolve yourself from the scam.
It is genuine mistake by the paper-setter. The board of studies oversees the curriculum and is in no way responsible for exam-related work. The exam committee is headed by Prof Hiren Dand. However, if people and the university feel I am morally responsible for the gaffe then I would resign.
