The Vasai-Virar region has emerged as the top manufacturer of bootleg liquor over the past two years if sources in the police and locals are to be believed. In fact, the killer hooch at Malvani apparently came from one such 'breweries' in Vasai. The makers of the illicit alcohol are so crafty that the police are struggling to bring them to books.

The dens have been set up on marshy lands of Maljipada, Naigaon, interior stretches of Vasai Creek, and near Kaman. One has to wade through slush and dense thickets of mangroves to access these spots.

Two years ago, the police had launched a massive crackdown by using speedboats and dismantled several illegal liquor units. However, sources said, the liquor mafia has become smarter and moved the bhattis to higher points. The advantage of height helps them keep an eye on police movement in the vicinity.

"Often they are tipped off by cops. Once they see us approaching their dens, they flee from the spot. Sometimes, they even attack police teams," said an officer on the condition of anonymity.

"We would continue our crackdowns. We have prepared a list of such places and would send our teams to conduct raids. We will ensure that the illegal activity does not take place in our jurisdiction," said Sharada Raut, superintendent of Palghar police.
