Nearly 100 engineers from the state's Public Works Department will soon be inspecting buildings for Green Building certification. A batch of 100 engineers will be coursed and trained so that they can assess buildings which follow the norms of whether they are sustainable or 'green' in their construction or not. Green building certification is awarded only after a developer carries out various steps, which includes even disposing of debris properly.

The department is tying up with GRIHA Council, (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) and will certify the officials from PWD as assessors. Confirming the same CP Joshi, Secretary (Roads), PWD said, "These officials will first carry out inspection and certification of government buildings. They will then inspect and certify other buildings built by private developers. The fee will be given to GRIHA, and the inspection will be carried out by our engineers, who will be certified as assessors."

According to Sanjay Sehi, Chief Executive Officer of GRIHA, the government signed a memorandum of understanding with GRIHA earlier this year. "They have said that all the buildings to be built in future by the PWD department will be Green buildings. They have even registered 64 such projects since then till now that will be green buildings,' he said.

Sethi says that there is a misconception amongst many that construction of green buildings is more expensive than conventional buildings. However, that isn't the case he claims, adding that there is no cost escalation for construction of a green building; a green building can be built in cost competitive way. He also expects that in near future things will better for the green building construction with much more awareness about it. Meanwhile, GRIHA has also tied up with University of New South Wales, where researches for betterment in the field shall be carried out.
