Due to lack of appropriate hostel amenities as promised, female students of University of Mumbai (MU) pursuing Masters of Law (LLM) have decided to cancel admissions and try their luck in other government universities.

For a batch of 600 students, mere five seats for girls and 22 seats for boys have been allocated in the MU hostel.

The admission process for 2019-20 academic batch is still ongoing, however, it's expected to be on the line of 2018-19 enrolment that had to strength of 370 female students of 600 and the remaining male students.

The female students, who reside outside the Mumbai region, have ruled out the option of living as a paying guest (PG) for not being economically viable.

One of the female student Reema Chandane (name changed), who has decided to cancel the admission said, "Despite clearing the interview round for hostel seat, the university declared me as ineligible. However, when I looked around for rooms on rent basis and PGs, it was beyond my financial capacity."

Generally, students seeking for hostel facility in the university have to go through two round of interviews to secure a room for a year

Another female student on the condition of anonymity, who tried to look for PG in varsity ambiance said, "I was asked for a deposit of a whopping Rs 45,000 and rent of Rs 16,000 per month separately, which was impossible to afford as a student."

The annual fees for hostel accommodation in MU for female students pursuing a law degree is around Rs. 8,000.

Speaking on the dilapidated condition of the hostel facility another student, who passed out in 2017 said, "The condition of the varsity hostel is worse. Hundreds of formalities have to be done and even if you get one, students have to carry their own bed and other necessary items."

A similar but worse situation was faced by the last year's students, wherein instead of five seats, there was only one seat was allocated to female students due to non-availability of hostel rooms.

"The Madam Cama girls' hostel at Churchgate is being used to accommodate more students and gradually increasing the capacity of rooms, however, allocating rooms to only those in maximum need and who fit in our criteria," a senior official associated with MU's hostel facility told this newspaper.
