Has the plan to construct a flyover over Ghodbunder Road junction on National Highway 8 been scrapped? It seems so. Earlier, IRB Surat-Dahisar Tollway was to build the structure, but now National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will get it done independently for which you may have to pay toll at a new plaza.

As per "Appendix-IV" of the works that IRB Surat-Dahisar Tollway is supposed to do, there is mention of having Ghodbunder Road junction flyover as a "6-lane flyover along NH-8". This junction is popularly known as 'Fountain Hotel junction'.

But in the last one year, modifications have been made to the designs of the flyover project and NHAI has floated tenders to construct a creek bridge at Varsova along with an "interchange". This "interchange" is nothing but the Ghodbunder Road junction flyover. In March, NHAI put the "Construction of New 4-lane Bridge across Varsova creek and its approaches with Interchange" project for tendering, at an approximate cost of Rs188.41 crore. The financial model for implementation is now hybrid annuity, for which the private contractor who will bag the project may get rights to collect toll from motorists. While a part of the construction cost will be borne by NHAI, the balance will be paid by the contractor.

Detailing about the project, sources said, "How would it be possible to have a 6-lane bridge for the highway which has 4 lanes at the moment? And widening too hasn't happened." Therefore, due to land acquisition constraints there is a possibility of NHAI deleting this work for Ghodbunder Road junction flyover.

Now, Varsova creek bridge will be constructed along with the flyover to reduce congestion at this junction. The proposed creek bridge has a length of 550 metres and the rest are its approaches and the flyover length.

dna made multiple attempts to reach out to IRB Infrastructure Developers (IRB Surat-Dahisar Tollway), but they did not respond to questionnaire mailed to them.
