Irate bikers torch, damage vehicles in Lalbaug area; Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria rushes to spot

Situation at Lalbaug got tensed on Sunday night after a traffic constable in the Lalbaug area stopped a biker who was coming from the wrong direction.

"Traffic policemen, who were on bandobast, stopped the biker and a few other bikers joined the offender and started arguing with them. The youths indulged in altercation with a traffic police inspector. A few more persons who were present at the spot also joined the argument. However, the situation was brought under control soon," said additional commissioner of police, cenral region, RD Shinde.

Scotching rumours that some policemen were assaulted, joint commissioner of police, traffic, BK Upadhyay said, "There was some commotion at Bharat Mata Chowk but no policeman has been assaulted by the public."

The Kalachowkie police took some youths into custody. To ensure the situation does not get out of hand, Rakesh Maria, commissioner of police, rushed to the spot. Maria later appealed to citizens to maintain peace.
