The Iraqi consulate in Mumbai has written a letter to the Mumbai police expressing fear that their ancient artifacts and idols which were believed to have been stolen by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Iraq could land up in the black market in Mumbai and other parts of India. The Mumbai police would be sharing the information with all the zonal deputy commissioners of police (DCPs) in the city to keep extra vigil for such smuggled artifacts.

The letter sent to the Protection and Security department by the Iraqi consulate states that a total of 23 statues which include statues of gods, animals and birds made of copper and gold could be smuggled into the city to be sold in the black market. "The letter received by us informed about the artifacts with historical value, likely to be smuggled into the city," said an officer for the Protection and Security department of Mumbai police. "The letter states that the idols and the artifacts are were looted by the ISIS after the ransacked the museum in Mosul and ancient city of Nirmud in Iraq last year," he added.

The ISIS which came into prominence last year after they took over some cities of Iraq believes in the principle of Islam, which forbids idol worshipping. Hence, the ISIS terrorists have been systematically targeting museums, temples and other historical places in Iraq. It is also feared that the ISIS could possibly sell the artifacts in the grey market to raise fund for their terror outfit.

When contacted, the additional commissioner of police (Protection and Security) said: "We have received the letter from the consulate and accordingly it will be shared with all the zonal DCPs in the city and other agencies."
