The Sewri sessions court on Wednesday remanded Iqbal Kaskar, the younger brother of fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim, in police custody till February 6. The police, while seeking his remand, informed the court that since he is the brother of Dawood, they need to check if he was involved in seeking extortion money from the complainant.

According to the police, a real estate agent had approached the JJ Marg police station and registered a complainant against Kaskar and his two associates for demanding 'protection money' from him. Thus, an extortion case was registered against them.

On Janauary 30, the complainant was allegedly summoned by Kaskar to his office at Pakmodia Street in south Mumbai. The complainant told the police that Kaskar demanded Rs3 lakh from him. When he refused to oblige, he was beaten up by Kaskar and his two aides. He then approached Byculla police station which registered a Zero FIR and transferred the case to JJ Marg police station.

On the afternoon of February 3, JJ Marg police summoned him for questioning and later placed him under arrest. The accused were booked under Indian Penal Code sections 385 (putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

Senior police officers are of the view that after the death of Dawood's sister Haseena Parker in July last year, Kaskar is believed to have taken over the extortion business. They claim that the police have reasons to believe that Kaskar is running the business using the name of Dawood. However, Kaskar's detailed interrogation will throw more light on the nature of his business.

Kaskar was deported in 2003 from the United Arab Emirates. However, in 2007, he was acquitted in all the cases against him.
