In a relief for hundreds of students appearing for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exams in areas which are affected by load shedding, the Maharashtra government has provided inverters/generators at the examination centres to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

A division bench of justices Abhay Oka and Anil Menon refused to dispose of the matter saying they want to ensure that the students appearing for examination in October too were provided with such basic facilities.

Abhinandan Vagyani, government pleader, informed HC that the 231 examination centres which were affected by load shedding have been provided with either inverters/generators as of February 26.

The government had assured last week that they would provide the necessary generators/inverters at the 125 HSC and 321 SSC exam centres.

The HC had also issued contempt notice to the state government for failing to comply with its earlier orders directing it to provide alternate arrangements for power supply to students.

Vagyani requested the HC to take back the contempt notice saying that they have made alternate arrangements.

However, justice Oka said that they want to ensure that the orders are complied in future as well.

The judges said that they want to see whether same arrangements would be made for October examinations as well.

"We are keeping the matter for reporting compliance (by state government) in September," said the judges.

HC has kept the matter for further hearing on September 30.

HC is hearing of a bunch of petitions, highlighting the non-implementation of a 2009 HC order, directing the state to provide uninterrupted power supply to exam centres. One of the petitions, filed by Navi Mumbai social worker Vishnu Gawli, alleged that many students have to appear for the exams in darkness.

Around 13.39 lakh students will be appearing for their HSC exams from Saturday in the state. Over 17 lakh students will appear for their SSC exams.
