Following a recent input from the Intelligence Bureau that Lashkar-e- Taiba (LeT) operatives could have sneaked into Mumbai, the Maharashtra Police has asked all its unit commanders to gather information from real estate agents, SIM card dealers and vehicle repairers to find out if anyone approached them for help in return of handsome sums of money without proper documentation. Unit commanders have also been told to build informants in these sectors so that information on terrorists and other criminals can be gathered.

The input, which was shared with the Maharashtra Police last week, stated that under the direction of Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), a group of around 21 militants of LeT have entered in India recently and are placed in Mumbai, Punjab, Rajasthan and Delhi. The input also warned that the group is planning to carry out spectacular terrorist incident in India. Intelligence agency also advised the police to beef up security at railway stations, bus terminals, airports, market places, malls, shopping complexes and religious places.

"Apart from taking usual precautionary measures, we have, over and above, asked all unit commanders to gather information from SIM card sellers, real estate agents and garage persons. The reason these people have been chosen is because in past cases we have seen that terrorist elements have been using vehicles, lodges and SIM cards with fake documents, and hence, it is necessary that we build a good set of informants among these people.

Also those who have given more rent than prevailing market rates or paid the yearly rent in one go will be under our watch," said a senior officer from Maharashtra Police.
