While the elected representatives may be in news for misbehaving with traffic policemen on duty, citizens are becoming more disciplined on roads.

An RTI data shows that there is a considerable fall in the number of cases where citizens were booked for misbehaving with traffic policemen on duty.

The non-exhaustive data – because the traffic department does not have a central data management system and the compilation was done from figures provided by most traffic chowkies — states that there is 50% fall in cases of people behaving with the police. The data was given to RTI applicant Chetan Kothari. A total of 7,827 cases of misbehaviour with policemen were registered in 2010. This reduced to 3,534 cases in 2012.

The other offences included no-parking violations, suspended licences, cases registered against violators, talking on cell phone, not wearing a helmet, not wearing a seat belt, Marathi number plates, tinted windows and other violations of traffic norms and rules. Apart from tinted windows in vehicles, vehicles having Marathi number plates and drivers not wearing seat belts, all other violations have seen a drop.

The other sharpest fall was in the number of people talking on their cell phones. It witnessed over 50% fall from 13,316 cases in 2010 to 6,983 in 2012. This was followed by over 30% drop in parking in no-parking zones.

From 5,25,797 no-parking violations in 2010, last year saw 3,54,006 cases. The drop is significant as the numbers of vehicles is said to be rising every year with the space-starved city not being able to provide solutions besides pay-and-park facility. “However, I doubt if we have become more disciplined,” said Ashok Datar, transport expert. Kothari lauded a decline in violations but said: “The police should ensure that tinted windows are replaced.”
