Two naval officers, who went missing after the mishap on Indian Naval Submarine (INS) Sindhuratna, were declared dead on Thursday after the vessel was towed back into Mumbai harbour.

The deceased officers have been identified as Lt. Commander Kapish Muwal and Lt. Manoranjan Kumar. Their bodies were recovered from the third compartment of the ill-fated vessel.

The ill-fated Sindhuratna was on its way to a mid-sea exercise in the wee hours of Wednesday when a fire broke out in one of its compartments, possibly due to leakage in its battery. Seven sailors were injured. They were rushed to INS Asvini, the naval hospital in Colaba.

"Their bodies were found inside the third compartment around 2.30pm on Thursday. Medical officers were present with the rescue team," said a naval officer. The bodies were sent to INS Asvini for post mortem.

The seven injured marines who were airlifted from the submarine on Wednesday after they fell unconscious due to smoke were kept in the ICU of the hospital. However, on Thursday, they were moved to a separate ward as their condition was said to be stable.

"While nine officials got trapped in the smoke, the others in INS Sindhuratna were shifted to the escorting submarines. The seven among the trapped officers managed to come out of the compartment but they fell unconscious. Unfortunately, two officers could not make their way out and they died," the officer added.

"We have informed family members of all 94 Sailors who were on board. We knew about two missing officers, so their family members were also informed. They have arrived in the city on Thursday," said another officer.

"As of now, we are not aware of the internal damage caused to the compartment. However, there is no damage to the submarine. A high-level inquiry panel, headed by an officer of the rank of Rear Admiral, has been constituted to look into all the accidents that have occurred in the past few months," said a naval officer.
