The state information commission (SIC) on Monday set March 4 as the next date of hearing to decide if MMOPL is a public authority. Reliance-led Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) is a special purpose vehicle formed for the construction, operation and maintenance of the city's first Metro rail between Versova and Ghatkopar.

The hearing date was given after much protest from the complainant. A division bench of state chief information commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad and information commissioner (Brihanmumbai bench) Ajit Kumar Jain heard the issue.

Shailesh Gandhi, former central information commissioner, had sought information from MMOPL, and filed an application in December. The information sought was copies of inspection reports of the Metro line given by the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety. The application stated that if there are no such reports, MMOPL should say as much.

MMOPL, however, asked Gandhi to approach MMRDA, the "appropriate public authority", for this.

During the hearing, those representing MMPOL sought for an adjournment. But Gandhi contested that since the hearing was first scheduled for January 27, MMOPL ought to have come prepared.

"This is a waste of the commission's and my time. At the very least MMPOL should be made to pay a fine of Rs5,000 as compensation to the commission," said Gandhi. MMOPL representatives stated that they were prepared for the previous hearing. "In that case why are you not prepared now?" questioned Gaikwad.

MMOPL representatives stated that they wanted to prepare a few more documents. "It is not our right but a request that we are making. On first hearing even the courts grant adjournment," said the representative. Making it clear that no more adjournments will be given, the commission stated that the hearing will be conducted on March 4.
