The state government, in a reply to the state information commission, has reiterated that the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) circular, that recommends putting up of information under section 4, does so only in the local language. The government said that such a thing is being done in any case.

Section 4 looks after the suo motu disclosure of information by public authorities.

The clarification came after the commission had asked the government to inform them on their policy as per the DoPT circular.

The DoPT is the nodal agency looking after the implementation of the RTI Act.

Mahendra Dharod, an RTI applicant, had asked for the government's policy on putting up information in English.

The reply given by additional chief secretary states that as per DoPT circular, the information has to be provided in the local language, which is Marathi, and is being provided in any case.

During the hearing, the PIO stated that the government is yet forming a policy on the languages in which information has to be provided, particularly English.

"I will now wait for the government's response," said Dharod.
