The Mumbra police on Thursday evening arrested a woman for stealing a couple’s 2-day-old baby and presenting it to her family as her own. She was caught within seven hours.

According to the police, Preeti Patil, 24, a resident of Agasangaon in Diva, befriended Tukaram Pawar and his wife, Suvarna, who had delivered a baby boy at Balaji Hospital, Diva.

After Suvarna was discharged on Thursday morning, Patil called her up and said they should get the newborn vaccinated, and that she knew good doctors at Shree Hospital in Dombivli who would do it. Happy that a stranger was willing to help them, Tukaram went along with an aunt, Sugandha, to the station, where Patil met them.

After convincing both of them that she could take care of the baby, she climbed into the ladies compartment of the local, at around 12.30pm. When Tukaram got off at Dombivli and couldn’t spot Patil, he lodged a complaint with the Mumbra police.

“Patil took the baby home and told everyone that it was hers.  This raised people’s suspicion, as nobody had seen her pregnant, and the locals informed us about it,” said DCP Ashok Dudhe, Zone II.

The police have pressed cheating and kidnapping charges against her.

Patil, in her statement, said she had undergone an abortion over five months ago, and stole the child as she had not informed her husband about the abortion. She also said that she was helped by one of the doctors at Balaji hospital.  DCP Dudhe said,”we are investigating if the doctor is involved in this case.  And if he is then we will arrest him.”
