The growing relationship between India and Seychelles was celebrated at a special event in the 115-island country earlier this month. The three-day event attracted a cross-section of people who were treated to gala performances, showcasing the flavours of India.

Performers, among them Bollywood, Tamil and Telugu stars, displayed the best of celluloid, music and cuisine. Indians are the largest ethnic group in the country. “It is not only our respective governments who have made this possible. It is our people who have contributed in large measure to the warmth and prosperity of this relationship,” said Alain St. Ange, Seychelles minister for tourism and culture, at the opening of an exhibition that traced the relations between the countries.

The idea for the India Seychelles Day was given shape by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture in Seychelles and the High Commission of India, which contracted Alchemist, a leading marketing solutions company, to curate the event.

“The theme was a celebration of Indian food, music and movies, aspects of India that are best known in Seychelles. Some of the best talent from India did some power-packed performances, representing India in all its colour and vibrancy,” said Manish Porwal, managing director, Alchemist.

The programme was held from October 4 to 6 and it is proposed to make it an annual feature on the weekend succeeding Gandhi Jayanti. Indians, who constitute about 7% of the population of Seychelles, went there as labourers and small traders. Trade between the countries is estimated at $50 million.

Anujita Jain, chief operating officer, Alchemist, said, “We are honoured to have contributed in making this celebration into the largest Indian celebration ever in Seychelles.”
