The 'grievance fortnight' that was announced by the Income Tax department has turned out to be a non-starter that bordered on being a farce. dna visited the I-T department on Friday, the final day of the fortnight that took place between April 18 and 29 and, while the banner for the event was hanging invitingly at the entrance, it didn't reflect the true picture.

In fact, the people behind the 'enquiry' desk in the building themselves were clueless about the banner. A lady (name unknown) there said: "I am not aware of it, you can go to room number 383."

But in that room, half the staff was unavailable. The answer as to why was received in room number 323, where an official said: "Today is the last day of the month and we do not know if you will find the officials because today is also our sports day and people have already left for the same."

Asked about the 'grievance fortnight', the official added: "Yes, there is something going on, but we are not aware of what it exactly is."

In one of the other rooms, another official said, "All these orders (about the 'grievance fortnight') are passed by our chief, and he is on leave." This official also said: "We leave the building from the back gate, so we are not even aware of what banner you are talking about."

Even the PRO's office, which could purportedly provide information, was found to be empty.

Finally, the same lady official who was initially at the enquiry desk made a phone call and said, "A person has to go to the designated officer in their jurisdiction and get the issue resolved. But today being the last day, I don't know if that would be possible."
