Incessant rains keep disaster management officials on their toes

Potholes and craters have resurfaced on several roads and motorists have complained of bumpy rides. Potholes were seen at Golden Dias naka, Tikujiniwadi Road, Vartak Nagar and in other areas.

After a dry spell, the continuous rainfall has come across as good news for the city, which was on the verge of facing water cuts. However, the downpour has also kept the disaster management cell busy, as there has been an increase in the number of rain-related complaints.

"Around 1,128mm of rain has been received in Thane till now," said an official.

The cell has received 18 complaints, with three cases of tree-falls, one wall collapse, several cases of water-logging and 13 other complaints. In the last two days, trees fell on two cars at Louiswadi and on a school bus, and a garden wall collapsed at Rani Compound. There have also been complaints about water-logging in Naupada, Vartak Nagar.

Disaster management officer Santosh Kadam said, "There have been incidents of tree fall, wall collapse and water-logging, but no casualty or major incident has been reported till now. Our department is working actively. We are responding to all complaints accordingly."

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) had instructed housing societies to chop trees and branches of old trees to prevent any untoward incident.
