Due to continuous rainfall and flooding the only route to reach Palghar was by train
On Friday morning at around 11 am the bifurcation and formation of the new Palghar district would have been declared but spectators and state authorities had to wait for Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to arrive as they were informed at the last minute that he would arrive by train due to bad weather and flooding due to incessant rains since past three days.
Earlier it was informed to the state officials that Chavan would arrive by the helicopter from the Santacruz aerodrome but due to bad weather in Mumbai and especially in Thane district it was not advisable to fly to the while severe rains and heavy winds along the route to Palghar led to traffic and flooding so the state security officials instead advised train travel. Chavan commuted in the Bandra-Vapi passenger train in the special coach and when he alighted at Palghar station, he shocked the station staff and commuters travelling in the same train.
"We were informed very late about his arrival. We did not expect him to commute by train but due to bad weather his travel plans were changed and he came with Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat, and Vasantrao Davkhare tagged along too," said an official from station master office at Palghar.
"We were informed by the state security officials about CM's arrival by train at the last minute when he boarded the train from Bandra and we had to post police personnel at various locations along the route of the innaugration points, said a senior police official from Thane Rural Department.
"The official announcement would have taken place at 11am but due to change in travel plans CM Chavan had to commute by train as the main Maswan bridge is shut due to overflowing of Surya river," said Rajendra Gavit, state minister for tribal affairs and development.
