If you have applied for Mahanagar Gas Ltd's (MGL) pipeline connection and are waiting for the connection to start, then beware. Currently, a gang is active in the city and approaches housing societies under the guise of being representatives of MGL. They collect cash from the society members, under the pretext of altering stove connection for pipeline gas.

MGL has issued an advisory to potential customers mentioning that MGL does not collect cash. In fact, even the smallest amount is taken by cheque, the advisory states.

According to Aniket Tavare, a resident of sector 11 in Kharghar, some men visited their society last week and took Rs200 from each member of the society on the pretext of altering the gas stove connection.

"The watchman of our housing society did not stop them as they said they are from MGL and our society too had applied for piped gas connection. These men claimed that the supply will start in a couple of weeks. They also issued a receipt on the name of some 'Mahanagar Gas Stove Private Ltd'," Tavare said.

He added, "When we contacted local MGL official, he informed us that MGL only accepts cheque. He informed us that such a gang was active in Navi Mumbai and they had received such complaints earlier. The men informed us that if we do not pay now then the MGL will not be responsible for non-delivery of gas supply. We asked them to show their identity cards, which they did."

Another member, said, "We have already paid Rs500 for the registration to MGL. We are yet to pay Rs5,500 for the connection. These men told us that Rs200 will be deducted from Rs5,500 and we will have to pay the remaining amount later."
