Yet another woman is said to have become a victim of dowry killing at the hands of her in-laws in the city. Not only that, while her in-laws were allegedly pouring kerosene on her and setting her on fire, her husband allegedly stood motionless and watched his parents in action.

Heena Shaikh, 20, lived with her husband, Altaf, and in-laws in Pathanwadi area in Malad (East). The incident took place on Thursday night. Locals saw smoke emanating from the Shaikhs’ residence. Suspecting foul play, they started knocking on the door and forced the family to open.

The neighbours found a charred Heena lying unconscious in the bathroom. She was rushed to hospital, where doctors said she had sustained 100% burns. In her preliminary statement to the police on Friday, Heena said that as she was being harassed by her in-laws for dowry, she decided to end her life by setting herself on fire. However, in her second statement, which was recorded in front of the special executive magistrate, she said her in-laws torched her in front of her husband who simply watched and did not make a single attempt to save her.

“Soon after this statement was recorded, we took Altaf and his parents, Lal Mohamed and Rehmen Bi, in custody for attempted murder. However, on Saturday, Heena died while undergoing treatment, following which her second statement was turned into a dying declaration. We booked the trio for murder,” said Subhash Dafle, senior inspector of the Kurar police station.

Heena married Altaf, who runs an imitation jewellery business, two years ago. Soon after marriage, Altaf and his parents allegedly started harassing her physically and mentally to get money from her parents. They humiliated her for not getting enough dowry during the marriage.

Heena’s family resides in Jalna, where her father works as a truck driver. They had given Rs10,000 during her marriage. Her in-laws allegedly demanded Rs50,000 which her father could not afford to give.

A neighbour from the locality said the family was very religious and no one expected the Shaikhs to be so ruthless towards anyone, let alone their daughter-in-law.
