The good folks at The Bombay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) are fed up. They are tired of the society's ill treatment towards their pets, the increase in the number of pets being abandoned, the miserable living conditions of the Victoria horses and the purchase and sale of foreign breeds that find the Indian weather unsuitable. "We are so tired of all this that we decided to do something about it. We wanted to make people aware of the pain and suffering they cause to fellow living beings," says Divya Chaudhry, spokesperson of the fund-raising committee at BSPCA.

The organisation is hosting, for the first time, a carnival and fund-raiser called the Woof & Hoofs Carnival at the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), Mahalaxmi, aimed at raising funds to refurbish the Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals, particularly the decrepit horse ward.
As part of the event, BSPCA has invited PETA, WSD, IDA, TSPCA, PAWS and The Corbett Foundation to sell their merchandise and raise funds for their respective area of work. "It is our responsibility to change people's thinking. In the last few years, animal awareness groups have been focusing on aspects such as adoption, animal cruelty, sterilisation of strays and protection of wildlife. We wanted to bring all of them under one roof," adds Chaudhry.

The BSPCA also hopes to get more children interested in their work and have thus, organised fun and interactive activities like a puppet show and a dog-walking competition for them. They hope to introduce children to the intricacies involved in choosing and keeping a pet. Additionally, there will be food stalls; shops selling lifestyle products, doggy treats and accessories; performances by the TR Dance Company and a fun fair. "We will be conducting awareness talks and discussions. It is important to put individuals in touch with the correct agencies so that they are aware of their actions," adds Chaudhry.
