An imposter, pretending to be Bollywood actor Malaika Arora, is allegedly lurking in the webworld. Aspiring models have received in their emails scanned copies of a letter — drafted on a “fake” Malaika Arora letterhead and bearing her “forged” signature — inviting them to send in their “glamorous pictures” for a “beauty contest”.

The Bollywood actor filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police on Wednesday. Police sources said that investigations were on. No arrest had been made yet. “Several Bollywood stars have been harassed by fraudsters. But never before has one been targeted in such a planned manner,” said a police officer on condition of anonymity.

A furious Malaika said, “I am shocked. Scores and scores of youngsters are calling me and my friends, saying that I am organising a beauty contest, and have asked them to send me their pictures in bikini. Some of them even claimed that they have received a signed letter from me on their emails, inviting them to a bikini photo-shoot. The signature on that (letter) is definitely not mine. I have already lodged police complaints.”

The fraud, according to the actor, has made the internet a medium to hook youngsters crazy to make it to the glamour world of Bollywood and fashion.  Malaika added, “The imposter has created fake IDs on gmail, Facebook and Orkut, and  have started approaching young actors in the film industry. Some of them have already made the mistake of sending pictures to those fake email addresses. I feel so ashamed because of all this. I have told all my friends to spread the word that I am not behind this. I have no account on Facebook. The Malaika there is not me for sure. I stay awake whole night dreading that I will get a call from someone claiming that I have asked her to send me nude photos.”

One of the actors contacted by the alleged imposter is Alina Wadiwala. She told DNA that it was her sister, Sana, who first smelt a rat. Alerted by Sana, Alina insisted on meeting the Malaika of the net in person before sending her photos. At this, the imposter lost cool and threatened Alina with “dire consequences.” (Copies of the google chat transcripts are with DNA)

“I was told to send my bikini pictures. When I said that I need an official invitation, I was mailed a letter signed by Malaika (a copy of it is with DNA). A few days later, when I insisted on meeting her, the person started abusing me and threatened to ruin my career,” Alina said.
