A 33-year-old alleged Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative, Anwar Abdulalgani Bagwan, fled from JJ Hospital on Friday and was nabbed after a 20 minute chase by a police guard outside the hospital. After searching for him in the hospital, the police escort constable found Bagwan running down the footpath and gave him a chase. Anwar Abdulalgani Bagwan was lodged in Taloja prison and was admitted for treatment of his left eye in JJ Hospital.

Bagwan pushed police escort constable Ashok Namdev Shinde while walking towards the ward and went on to hide in the hospital premises. Shinde soon spotted Bagwan running outside the hospital. "Shinde then chased Bagwan and shouted for help. Passers-by too joined the chase and managed to finally nab him. We have registered the case under section 224 (Resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the Indian Penal Code against the accused and we have taken the statement from the police guard," said Dilip Shinde, Senior Inspector, JJ Marg police station.

Bagwan was allegedly an active member of IM and used to impart training to the outfit members on how to administer anaesthesia to the people the outfit wanted to kidnap in order to raise terror funds. He was also in touch with IM co-founders and brothers Yasin and Riyaz Bhatkal. He was arrested in 2009 for allegedly letting his apartment in Koregaon Park, Pune to members of an IM module. Bagwan and four other inmates had assaulted a policeman inside Taloja jail, for which he was convicted and is serving a sentence of two and half years.
