The Railways and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation have stepped up demolition of illegal structures and slums near rail premises. Nearly 40 days after the stampede at Elphinstone Road station, the authorities conducted a major demolition drive outside Parel station on Tuesday.
Apart from this, there are encroachments near the railway station and near the old road-overbridge, where slums have come up.
“There were 33 illegal encroachments at Parel which have been demolished today,” said Sunil Udasi, Chief PRO, Central Railway.
Police protection was provided along with BMC staff to monitor the demolition drive. Assistant Municipal Commissioner (F-South ward) of the BMC, Kishor Desai said, “The demolition was carried by the Railways. As the Railways had asked us, we provided the manpower but the demolition was under the supervision of the Railways only.”
Sources said that these structures were also obstructing the new foot-overbridge (FOB) that the Army will soon be building. The Army has already begun work on the FOB and designs have been planned.
“There were encroachments on the land where the FOB has its landing. These are now being removed with the help of the BMC,” said a Central Railway official. The Army is connecting the existing FOB at Parel with the new one that shall have a landing on Elphinstone Road near the flower market.
Over the past few days, there have been demolitions outside several railway stations. “We have been carrying out demolition since the last one month. We will provide passenger amenities wherever needed,” said Ravinder Bhakar, chief PRO, WR. They have carried demolitions at Elphinstone Road, Dadar, Matunga Road, and Bandra in the past few days wherein more than 150 structures and slums have been razed.
