The Bombay high court on Wednesday asked the state government to consider a proposal put forth by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-B) offering help in preparing a flow chart to create real time data for eye donations.

The court gave the direction while hearing a public interest litigation seeking a change in section 6 of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act to facilitate retrieval of corneas in medico-legal cases without hassles.

IIT-B's Centre for Urban and Science Engineering had sent a proposal regarding the preparation of a system which would help track the availability of corneas for those seeking transplant. The government has, however, not responded yet.

A division bench of Justices Abhay Oka and Anil Menon directed the government to see if the proposal suited its needs. "They (IIT) have come forward themselves. Look into their suggestions," said Justice Oka.

The HC had earlier directed the government to start uploading data of those seeking eye donations on its website for better transparency in the transplant process. During the hearing, the government informed the HC that it has updated the data till January.

The government had on June 26, 2013, issued directions for the BMC and other city corporations and councils to include a column for eye donations in death certificates and application forms. Apart from BMC, 15 more civic bodies in the state have started doing so. The inclusion of the column gives the kin of the deceased the option to donate the corneas to eye banks. This could be of great help to the visually challenged.
