In an attempt to make IC Colony area plastic-bag free zone, the parishioners of IC Church in Borivali will be distributing 10,000 cloth bags in a month’s time after creating awareness in a week’s time to encourage them to shun plastic bags. Seven years ago they had distributed 3,000 cloth bags to their parishioners to desist them from using plastic bags.

The drive is now being taken by them as part of Swachh Bharat Mission to promote larger concern for environment. They will also encourage them to use containers to carry food and other items.

The drive will start in a week’s time and will be done in stages. In 2010, the parishioners had distributed 3,000 cloth bags that were made by women self help groups after taking saris and cloth from parishioners.

“We are doing this because plastic is dangerous for our environment. It chokes are drains and when some people burn it, it releases toxic fumes. Hence, some active members of our parish who run the civic and political cell decided to ensure that the area be made plastic-bag free. We will do this in phases with awareness being created first for a month,” said Fr Alban D’Souza, assistant parish priest of IC Church.

To begin with, the church will reach to its over 23,000 parishioners in the area before spreading out to all in the IC Colony.

“In a week’s time, we will put boards and banners. We will not be doing this alone because it is a big thing. We have written to BMC for help and will involve people from various other NGOs, markets, associations, hawkers to help us so that they desist people from using plastic bags. In a month’s time, we look forward to distribute 10,000 cloth bags to parishioners. Number of cloth bags to be distributed will increase. Last time when we did, it died out but this time it will be done with greater vigor and support of parish council,” said Willie Shirsat, who heads Hindustani Ekta Lok Prajatantra (HELP), under civic and political cell of the Church through which the drive will be taken.

V Balamwar, deputy municipal commissioner, solid waste management said, “We will go through their demand and help them. However, plastic-bag free zone is not mentioned as target under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, So it will not be possible to help under that banner because it is a policy decision. However, if society is taking any good measure, we will definitely support it.”
