The death of 18-year-old Manmath Mhaiskar, the son of senior IAS officers Manisha Mhaiskar and Milind Mhaiskar, left the IAS cadre in Maharashtra shattered and in shock on Tuesday.
An overriding air of grief and gloom was palpable in the corridors of the Mantralaya. Almost the entire bureaucracy in Mumbai, as well as IPS officers, either attended Manmath's funeral at Chandanwadi, or visited the family at their residence in Bel Heaven at Marine Lines. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was present at the funeral.
"It was a big shock to us. We cannot imagine even in our wildest dreams that one of our colleague's sons has died in this manner. We do not know what went wrong. We are all struggling to come to terms with the death," said a senior IAS official requesting anonymity.
Milind Mhaiksar was working as personal secretary to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and is now posted as the vice president and CEO of MHADA, while Manisha Mhaiskar is principal secretary of the urban development department.
The senior bureaucrat added that both Manisha and Milind had a very promising career growth. "Besides, Mr and Mrs Mhaiskar, both are very humble in their conduct. She would always praise Manmath's reading habits. Manmath was a very voracious reader and everything was going well. We are not sure what transpired that resulted in his death. Our kids are also growing. Due to our busy schedule and late working hours, we spend little time with them, so it is difficult to understand their feelings. As a result of being part of a disciplinary cadre ourselves, we also ask them to work hard and score well. They have to not just survive, but also thrive in their career and life. Otherwise they will be nowhere in this cut-throat competition," the lady IAS official said, requesting anonymity.
