"It were not my encounters but investigations that were fake," announced former DIG of Gujarat Police DG Vanzara, who arrived at the city, after he was granted bail by the Ahmedabad court in the alleged fake Ishrat Jahan encounter case. He was granted bail in Sohrabuddin Shaikh encounter case last year.

Vanzara, 61, who was in prison for over seven years for both these cases, landed at the city airport on Wednesday evening after he was released from the Sabarmati prison. As per the court order, he can't enter Gujarat and his movements within Mumbai should be restricted.

Vehement about his faith in the judicial system, he said, "I respect the judiciary. There is no political influence behind my bail as many people think. I don't want to give credit to any party or politician. It was an unbiased decision by the legal system, and I'm certain that in the coming days my team and I will be proved innocent."

Adding that he can't comment on the details of the cases, he said the Gujarat police were targeted by the political class. "Most encounters happened in Uttar Pradesh and the least in Gujarat; yet, we were framed and tormented for no reason. All our encounters were genuine." He refused to give names of any politician or party when he said he was being framed.

The retired IPS officer was given a grand welcome by his family. He came with his son Prithviraj and was greeted by his two nieces, who live in Mumbai, along with other supporters.

Talking about the impact of this case on policing, he said, "It will bring down the force's morale. We acted as per the legal provisions. If we pay such a heavy price for protecting citizens, how can the force be motivated?" He added that he was not interested in entering politics. "Once a politician, always a politician," he quipped.

Vanzara, who has been provided armed security personnel, will be living with his relatives in Chembur. He has been instructed to appear before the court every Saturday.
