Gaurav Wadekar shudders at the thought of his struggle with renal impairment. The 14-year-old had been suffering from chronic urine infection since the age of two and complications had damaged his kidneys. The boy's ordeal ended last week when his mother donated a kidney to him.

"For the past year, I was a victim of constant abdominal pain and vomiting. I was on dialysis thrice a week since the past six months. I had to miss out on my college and studies due to my health conditions," said the 11th grade commerce student of a Kalyan college.

After doctors made it clear to Gaurav's parents that a transplant was the only way out, his mother Seema came forward. Her husband Babu Vithal is a daily labourer at Century Mills and earns about Rs5,000 a month. "The strenuous nature of my job wouldn't have permitted me to work with one kidney," said Babu, a resident of Ambernath.

The mother-son duo were last week wheeled into the operation theatre at Fortis Hospital in Mulund, where doctors transplanted a kidney from Seema into Gaurav's body.

"As a mother, it was heart-breaking to see my son undergo dialysis three days a week. He would come back from the procedure tired and frustrated. It seemed unfair that I had got the opportunity to live my life while my son was fighting for it," said 43-year-old Seema.

Seema said her joy saw no bounds when she was told that mother's kidney fits the best for the child. "I felt a little weak for a few days after the procedure, but now I'm eating properly and doing well. Yesterday, I went to meet Gaurav. He is all set to lead a normal life. It is impossible to describe the feelings in words."

Dr Harsh Dodeja, transplant surgeon at Fortis Hospital, said, "Gaurav's kidneys had shrunk substantially, which indicated their failure. We retained his kidneys as removing them would have meant two additional surgeries. While the old kidneys are at the back behind the rib cage, his mother's kidney was placed in the frontal part of the abdomen near the appendix and connected to the blood vessels."

Sitting on his hospital bed, Gaurav said he was excited at the prospect of leading a normal life, but was quick to express his gratitude to his mother. "She first brought me to this world and now she has given me a renewed lease of life. This is my second birth. I do not know how I will be able to repay her."
