Resigning from his post of Maharashtra Industries Minister, senior Congress leader Narayan Rane on Monday said that he did not want to be minister in a party that might lose the Assembly elections to be held in the state later this year.

Speaking to journalists in a press conference, Rane said, “I met the chief minister at 12:30 pm and submitted my resignation, putting forth my points. Congress faced a huge blow in the Lok Sabha elections. After that the government should have taken some stringent steps so that the same situation should not arise in the upcoming Assembly elections, but no such efforts were made by the party.”

Expressing his displeasure, Rane added, “Yes, I am angry. Nine years ago when I joined the party I was told that within six months I would be made chief minister, but even after all these years I was not considered for the post. The MLAs who came with me, did not get any ministry portfolio. I am angry because injustice was done to people who came along with me."

Criticising Chavan over the party's functioning, Rane said, “Public works are consistently delayed. Implementations on decisions taken three years ago are still pending. There is a problem in the administrative functioning and government officials are not working efficiently. At the same time, no efforts are being taken to stop corruption. There is no coordination between the government and the party”

"People have voted against the Congress in the Lok Sabha election, and the same thing will reflect in the Assembly election as the government has failed to change the perception of the people," he added.

When asked whether he was resigning over the post of chief minister, Rane said, “I would have taken a decision to quit one year after entering the Congress party. Assembly elections are in a few months and there is no use of taking the chief minister's post now. Chavan is a clean person, I don't criticise him personally. I am just speaking over his way of functioning." he said

Making it clear that he is not leaving the Congress party Rane said, “I haven't met leaders of any political party, and till date I have not made any plans to join some other political party. In the coming days, I will be visiting different regions and will start a Maharashtra tour from Nagpur.”

The chief minister will discuss the issue (resignation) with party chief Sonia Gandhi and once my resignation is accepted, I will decide my further course of action," Rane added.
