The news of promotion of Thane's joint commissioner of police, VV Laxminarayan, as the additional director general of police (admin) in Mumbai, on January 13, received mixed response from the officials as well as the residents. Around 4pm on Wednesday, Lakhsminarayan handed over the post to Ashutosh Dumbre, the new joint CP of Thane commissionerate.

An officer from Thane commissionerate said, "The joint commissioner was clean and used to be fair with everyone, be it anyone from any caste or religion. The major work done by the officer was that he himself went on raids and also, no one can forget that it was because of him that the four corporators were booked. Had this action not been taken, the residents would have said that nothing can be done by the cops here. Also, there were many officials and residents who told us that they want Laxminarayan to stay."

Another officer said after the order was received, there were few protests demanding that he should not be transferred. "It is not possible. Laxminarayan did not leave any accused without strict action and we expect that Dumbre would follow the same."

Laxminarayan was posted in February 2014 and he is an IPS officer of the 1990 batch. While many residents are opposing the move, officials said the officer served with utmost integrity. "In his two years of service, he has showed that no one is above law. Thane is a place where many local goons feel that they are the don, but he brought an end to this nuisance. His work has restored confidence of the people in us," said the official.

Meanwhile, Laxminarayan said the transfer is a part of the administration.

"The transfer is not done or given under any kind of pressure and it is a part of the administration. With the help and support from Thanekars only can the city be safe and smart too," said Laxminarayan at the press conference.
