How clean and secure are the tourist attractions of South Mumbai?

dna conducted a public health check-up and the security of tourist hot spots, and this what we found out.

Haji Ali
Timings: 9:30 am to 5:30 pm

Number of people in peak season: 2-3 lakh people on festival days

Number of people during normal season: 20,000-30,000

Facilities for tourist/pilgrims: Scholarship and medical help to people in need

Entry: Free

Security: Police personnel at the gate, 20 private security guards inside the dargah and 11 CCTV cameras inside the dargah.

Security rating: 4/5

Cleanliness: The entrance is littered because of the hawkers, who have set up illegal stalls. 

Cleanliness Rating: 2/5

Byculla Zoo

Timings: 10:30 am to 5:30 pm

Number of people during peak season: 10,000 to 20,000

Number of people during normal season: 2000-3000

Facilities for tourists: Four public toilets 

Entry: Rs5 (above 12 years)

Security: 4 security personnel at the entrance of the zoo. They conduct a thorough check of bags. Groups of three to four-security personnel patrol the zoo premises

Security rating: 4/5

Cleanliness: Very clean. Plastic bottles are not allowed inside the zoo, so there is no littering. The toilets are not very clean.

Mumba Devi Temple

Timings: 6.00am to 10.00pm

Number of people during peak season: 1.5 Lakhs to 3 Lakh

Number of people during normal season: 40,000 to 50,000

Facilities for tourists/pilgrims: There are pujaris, who perform various rituals for visitors. Mundan is also performed here.

Entry: Free

Security: Highly secure. No vehicle is allowed around the temple complex. There are policemen around the temple complex. At the entrance there are private security guards, who check bags and also pat down. There are several CCTV cameras in the temple complex. Photography is not allowed inside or outside the temple complex.

Security Rating: 5/5

Cleanliness: Except where the cows are kept, the whole complex is very clean.

Cleanliness Rating: 4/5

Hanging Gardens

Timings: 5:00 am to 9:00pm

Number of people during peak season: 15,000 to 18,000 people on weekends

Number of people during normal season: 2,000 to 5,000 people on weekdays

Facilities for tourists: 2 clean toilets; benches along the path; clean drinking water.

Entry: Free

Security: Five security guards patrol the premises

Security Rating: 4/5

Cleanliness: Very clean with dustbins around.

Cleanliness Rating: 5/5

Mahalakshmi Temple

Timings: 6:00am to 10:00pm

Number of people during peak season: Over 5 lakh during the festive season

Number of people during normal season: 40,000-50,000

Facilities for tourists/pilgrims: Minimal. For security reasons, bags are not allowed inside the temple complex, but no provision has been made for visitors to keep them anywhere, causing a huge inconvenience.

Entry: Free

Security: Good security. There are four police officers at the entrance who make sure that no bags are taken inside. They also have hand held metal detectors and every person entering the complex is checked thoroughly.

Security Rating: 5/5

Cleanliness: The temple complex is clean; outside, however, is not very clean.
