Hooch tragedy: Court gives cops custody of 2 arrested women till June 26

The two women who were arrested by the crime branch with regard to the Malvani hooch tragedy, were produced before the Esplanade court at Ballard Pier on Monday. The duo has been remanded in police custody till June 26.

According to police sources, while recording statements of kin of some of the victims, the crime branch team came to know that the two women had sold spurious liquor to them (victims). The women were identified as Mamta Laxman Rathod (30) and Agnes Gracy alias Aunty (50). Subsequently, the police arrested both of them.

On June 19, the police had arrested Raju Hanmanta Pascar alias Langda (50), Donald Robert Patel (47), Gautam Harte (30), Salimuddin Shaikh and Francis D'mello for their alleged involvement in the crime.

"At the instance of D'mello, we raided a place in Malvani on Sunday and seized eight drums, a few cans and other materials having about 1,200 litres of spurious liquor. The group used to sell each pouch of 200 ml for Rs10," said a crime branch officer.

The investigations into the case have so far revealed that Shaikh and D'mello are the main suppliers of the hooch. Harte was the carrier who used to take the consignment of hooch from Shaikh and D'mello and deliver it to Pascar and Patel.

On Thursday morning, residents of slums in Rathori Gaon in Laxmi Nagar near Gamdevi Jurrasic Park, Malvani, had consumed spurious liquor. Later, some of them developed breathing issues, vomited and had loose motions. Initially, the injured persons were rushed to Surana and Shatabdi hospitals. Considering the seriousness of the case, police chief Rakesh Maria had handed over the investigations to the crime branch.

Eight policemen from Malvani police station and four excise department officials have been suspended in the matter so far.
