In the second death reported in the area this monsoon, a middle-aged woman lost her life off the Marine Drive coastline on Monday after the waves swept her into the water.

The highest tide, at 4.95 metres, reported this month, set at 1:44. The incident took place around 1:15pm opposite the Sundar Mahal building along Marine Drive. The identity of the deceased could not be ascertained till going to press.

"Though we began the rescue work around 1:30pm, we managed to recover her body only by 4:15pm. She was rushed to the nearby GT hospital, but was announced brought dead. Since she wasn't accompanied by anyone when the incident occurred, her identity could not be ascertained," a fire dept official said.

The Marine Drive police have registered a case of accidental death in connection with the incident.

On June 15, Ratan Chavan (18), a resident of Kalyan, had lost his life when the waves during the high tide period swept him off the coast at Marine Drive. Ratan who was on a holiday, had come to the place along with his younger brother and had ventured on to tetra-pod along the coast, which proved costly. His brother, Chetan, somehow managed to survive.

Meanwhile, the BMC has again appealed to Mumbaikars not to venture into the sea during the high tide period on Tuesday. The tide is expected to rise up to 4.95 metres at 2:28 pm. "The tide can be dangerous if it's also raining at that time. We again request the public not to take risk and stay at a safe distance when there is high tide," the official said.
