A conman tried and utterly failed in his attempts to rob the 81-year-old lady in Mumbai's Dadar. Pushpaben Dhamji Bhalla stepped out of her house in Dadar and was accosted by a man introduced himself as a cop in plain clothes.

According Mid-Day's report, it was around 10 am on Wednesday when Pushpaben encountered him outside her society gate. He flashed an ID card and said “Maaji, humlog Crime Branch se hai. Civil mein ghoomkar poore area ka patrolling karte hai. (We are Crime Branch officials. We patrol in civil clothes)." He was later identified as Ali Raza Aziz Jaffari, a resident of Ambivli, and most definitely not a cop.

Jaffari to convince the old lady that the area was unsafe, and that she should hand over the gold bangles she was wearing, which were worth Rs 50,000, to him. He told her that the bangles will be returned once she crossed over and reached a safe area. Pushpaben told Mid-Day, “I doubted his intentions from the very beginning. I asked him to leave me alone. I don’t need any protection and I can take care of myself."

She also noticed that Jaffari was not alone and had two accomplices waiting in a taxi. She recounted that “he was trying to convince me again and again. When I refused, he got agitated and even tried to force me to obey. But I was adamant and refused to follow his orders. When he tried to grab my hand, I hit him hard, three to four times, with my walking stick.”

A vegetable vendor nearby heard her scream and rushed in to help. Soon, many others joined in. A cop from RAK Marg police claims that this is when the crooks realised their mistake.

Pushpaben, however, is still waiting for her bangles to come back to her, which the police have kept with themselves. She also said, “I am not scared at all. If this happens again, I will do the same thing again – hit the crooks with my stick.”

The police and her family are amazed and happy at how she stood her ground.
