Soon Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) staff and their families may get medical insurance.

BEST Chairman Arvind Dudhwadkar made this announcement on Tuesday while inaugurating 'The Yellow Drive', an awareness campaign on Hepatitis B for BEST staffers by Bristol-Myers Squibb, a multinational pharmaceutical company, in partnership with dna and Zee24Taas.

In all, around 3,000 employees will be covered to create awareness for Hepatitis B viral infection at various bus depots of BEST in Mumbai. To name a few, during the next two days, Ghatkopar, Pratikshanagar, and Oshiwara depots would be covered.

While inaugurating the three-day screening camp, Dudhwadkar said, "At the moment, discussions are on about having a mediclaim policy for the BEST staff and their families. Soon it may get formalised and announced." He added, "We tend to think that we will not fall ill, only others will, and hence we ignore it. The case of former minister RR Patil is there in front of us."

"Good health drives productivity. If you or a family member is unwell, it disturbs you and affects your work. If your work is affected, Mumbai suffers too. BEST is Mumbai's best identity," said Dr Uday Nirgudkar, Chief Executive Officer and Editor-in-Chief, dna and Zee24Taas.

Talking about the health camp, BEST's General Manager Dr Jagdish Patil said, "Depending upon the medical reports emanating from this campaign, we will try to get our employees treated for free for Hepatitis B." Dr Patil added many people complain about BEST staff's improper behavior and driving habits, but BEST conductors and drivers work under stressful conditions.

Welcoming the Hepatitis B campaign titled 'The Yellow Drive', he added that precautions should be taken against illness and the campaign has been aptly named. Drawing an analogy with traffic signals, he said that the yellow colour will act as a warning against disease.

Sawaram Dichwalkar, an employee who underwent the test, welcomed the initiative. He said, "Back in our day, we did not know of the vaccine. I had jaundice as I grew up. This is a good initiative to keep a check on it."
