In a move that is aimed at easing traffic snarls and congestion in the island city, the Mumbai Traffic Police has banned entry of all heavy vehicles in South Mumbai for 17 hours each day. Eight important areas of South Mumbai have also been declared as 24-hour no-parking zone for heavy vehicles. The move, which came into effect earlier this month, is aimed at ensuring that there is no congestion and hindrance to public movement due to parking and plying of heavy vehicles.

Speaking to DNA, Amitesh Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, said, "Beginning this month, we have banned entry of all heavy vehicles in South Mumbai during the day keeping in mind the traffic congestion and parking space. No heavy vehicles including luxury buses will be allowed to enter in the city beyond Wadala. However, the restriction will not be in effect from midnight to 7 am in the morning."

Moreover, the traffic police has also declared 24-hour no-Parking for heavy vehicles in the jurisdictions of eight police stations -- MRA Marg, Cuffe Parade, Colaba, Azad Maidan, Marine Drive, LT Marg and VP Road.

After assuming charge recently, Kumar had a meeting with senior officers of the traffic Police to discuss various issues related to traffic. The issue of parking and congestion of roads was discussed at length after which the notification was issued. "This will be a continuous notification," the officer said.

The move comes as a breather for residents of South Mumbai, who have been witnessing congestion on roads due to parking of heavy vehicles in the city.

"We welcome this move by the traffic police. Congestion due to plying and parking of heavy vehicles is a perennial problem in SoBo," said Usman Hashmi, Pydhonie resident.

"With this new rule, we can expect less traffic in SoBo which has huge vehicle traffic density," said Ketan Adhvaryu, Bhuleshwar resident.

& Analysis

SoBo has been facing problems of traffic congestion and haphazard parking by heavy vehicles for several years.
The move will help easing congestion and will be beneficial for pedestrians as well during the day.
However, it will increase congestion in other parts of the city as heavy vehicles will not be allowed to enter SoBo
