Apart from the apathy of civic authorities, movement of heavy vehicles on the roads of Kalyan has given birth to potholes. This is especially on Umbarde road in Kalyan west which has an RTO center where heavy vehicles come for their fitness tests. As such the fed up residents issued an ultimatum to the RTO to shift their inspection track for heavy vehicles elsewhere or face their wrath.

The RTO (regional transport office) at Umbarde village in Kalyan west which has been here for over three years has been a reason of discomfort for the villagers. Their inconvenience became all the more poignant after their main road developed craters during monsoon. "And all this is because of the heavy containers, and trucks that come to the RTO's inspection track for their fitness test," says Mangesh More, a resident of Pancharinagar.

The road which was never so bothersome is now riddled with potholes. The line of potholes start from D B chowk and goes up to RTO center in Umbarde. "All heavy vehicles from Thane, Palghar, Kalyan come to this center for their passing test," says Jaywant Balaram Bhoir, corporator from ward number 1, Kalyan West. "They have not only caused potholes but may lead to accidents as there are four schools and colleges in the area," he says.

Due to these potholes and non-stop vehicle movement, not only motorists but even pedestrians have a tough time. "Even pedestrians which include school children also find it difficult to walk on the road due to these vehicles," he says.

These vehicles, as well as the five deaths in Kalyan due to potholes, made residents wary. Hence, on July 14 the villagers led by Bhoir wrote to the RTO to shift their center elsewhere. "We requested them to find another place to take the passing test of the vehicles and they have agreed. We will not allow them here," says he.

When contacted Sanjay Sasane, deputy RTO, Kalyan said that heavy vehicles from Thane are not allowed to come to this track. "And vehicles from Palghar will come here for passing once a week. By Dussehra or Diwali, the new inspection track will be ready at Nandivali in Kalyan east and the heavy vehicle movement will shift there," he adds.
