After an extended weekend, Mumbaikars faced difficulty starting their work week on Tuesday due to a heavy downpour starting Monday night. Apart from water logging at several locations in the city, especially in the eastern suburbs, central railway (CR) services were also disrupted till noon due to a technical glitch in Kurla.

Between 8.30 am on Monday and 8:30 am on Tuesday, the eastern suburbs received highest rainfall at 60 mm, followed by the island city with 50.9 mm rainfall. The western suburbs received only 26.5 mm rainfall.

Sion witnessed major waterlogging near the railway station and SIES College, causing inconvenience to commuters. BEST bus routes at Sion were also diverted in the morning. Water even collected on railway tracks between Kurla and Sion, a chronic waterlogging spot which led to central and harbour railway services running behind schedule till noon. As many as 13 services were cancelled in the morning, to the dismay of office-goers.

Other areas which witnessed a similar predicament were Vidyavihar, Vikroli, Bhandup, Mulund, Jogeshwari-Vikroli link road, below Asalpha Metro station, among others. While chronic waterlogging spots like Hindmata, Kings Circle, Milan subway, Poinsar subway, Mankhurd and others also had minor waterlogging, the de-watering pumps at these locations drained out the rainwater and prevented further logging. By late morning, all the locations were cleared.

Due to high tide and heavy breeze, the city also witnessed 23 cases of trees falling. Civic experts have appealed to people to avoid parking cars below the tress which get uprooted in the strong breeze.

Weathermen have predicted that Mumbai will receive heavy rainfall on Wednesday too.
