While the city has been receiving sporadic rains over the past two days, the India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall in the next two days.

IMD officials said that although the conditions are favorable for heavy rainfall, rainfall activity is likely to be strengthened from Friday morning.

“The offshore trough is active between the Gujarat and South Kerala coast, which will increase rainfall  in the next few hours. So, the city, along with the Konkan and interior parts of state, will receive heavy rainfall,” said K Hosalikar, deputy director general of IMD.

This year during the monsoon, the Colaba and Santa Cruz weather stations have recorded 1,836mm and 1,990mm of rainfall respectively, which is higher than usual. On July 25, the Colaba station recorded 218.6mm of rainfall, which is the highest one-day rainfall in this season.

Stating that they have also issued a warning asking  fishermen not to enter the sea, Hosalikar added, “Normally, the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are responsible for rainfall in the city. Incidentally, both have been active for the past two months and helped in the formation of low pressure areas, which has led to the excess rainfall this year.”
