The first hearing on the inclusion of parts of Chembur in the heritage precinct, was conducted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Coporation' heritage review committee on Thursday.

The committee, headed by former state chief secretary Dinesh Afzalpurkar, has received about 85 petitions from residents, who are opposed to the heritage tag in Chembur as it would stall development in the area.

"As per the recent high court order, the committee will visit Chembur and based on our findings we will submit a detailed report to municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte by May 27," said Afzalpurkar. Kunte may send the report to the state urban development department.

Amit Kulkarni, a resident, said about 500 buildings had been included in the heritage list that was published on July 31, 2012. "Of these, 217 have already undergone redevelopment in the past decade. About 50 buildings are in a dilapidated state and need redevelopment. The heritage precinct status will stall the process," he said.

The meeting to hear suggestions and objections is mandatory, but was not held till now.

Suprada Phaterpekar, Shiv Sena corporation from Chembur, said, "Certain structures like the Jain temple which came up in 1964, the Chembur church which came up in 1959, could be given the heritage precinct tag. But it is pointless to include most of Chembur in the list."
